In Malaysia, a law enforcing agency, the Thai National Anti-Gambling Commission (THNAC) regulates and prohibits gambling activity in the country. According to this law, anyone found guilty of illegal gambling in Malaysia faces harsh penalties, including imprisonment. The law also prohibits gambling by foreigners, while local gambling is not prohibited. This leaves the door wide open for non- Malaysian residents and non-Thai people who wish to gamble on properties in the country. The law on gambling in Malaysia is called the Malay Law signed in 1997 by the then king, that makes gambling against the law in Malaysia a punishable offence.

The growth of online gambling in Malaysia has resulted in the increase in the number of casinos in the country. Gambling has become a multi-billion dollar business in the area and there are many well-established and reputable online casinos operating in the country. However, despite its increasing popularity, many officials believe that gambling is illegal in Malaysia. Efforts by the government and the Malaysian Lottery Commission to close down many online gaming portals continue unabated in spite of the recent law against online gambling in Malaysia. In view of the serious problems that exist in relation to illegal gambling in Malaysia, the government is considering introducing a national casino law sometime in the future. Such a move would effectively ban all casinos in Malaysia from both online and land-based casinos.
